I was able to snap a picture with my phone of Obsidian as he ran away. It’s not clear enough to show much, but I try using it as a reference for drawing him, like Marco suggested. It’s definitely better than my first try, but it still isn’t very good. I add watercolors to the sketch anyway. It looks like a little kid did it. I leave it on the dresser in my room.

“I’m sorry about the stray dog,” Aunt Maggie says over dinner.

I pull the sprouts out of the veggie wrap on my plate. I can handle the peppers, avocado, onion, and carrots, but the sprouts are too much.

“Thanks,” I say.

“I know you really want to bring him home, but it’s hard to tell if that arrangement would work well for us or for the dog.” Aunt Maggie sips her kombucha. “I want him to be okay, though. Does he seem hungry or dehydrated?”

“I’ve given him water,” I say, careful not to give away anything about the model home. “He sometimes drinks it, but not always. And he definitely has enough slobber and his nose is wet.”

“Well, that’s good, I guess.” She smiles. “Please don’t go following him around the desert, though, okay? Call me just like you’ve been doing, and I’ll come as soon as I can.”

“Okay.”

“How’s the artwork coming?” she asks, as though she knows I have two watercolor paintings in my room that I wouldn’t dream of entering into a contest.

“Um…I was thinking of asking Mr. Taylor for help. Chloe said I should.”

“That’s a great idea.” She nods as she notices a text come in on her phone. “Also, how about Mr. Bradley? Isn’t he helping you prepare for the contest in class?”

“Yeah, he is.” Mr. Bradley gives us stuff to work on, but I don’t want to make my contest entry with so many people around.

“Well, let me know how I can help if you need anything else.”

“I will, thanks.”

My phone buzzes with a text.

Marco: Can you come tomorrow at 6:30?
